Gum disease is characterised by red, swollen and bleeding gums. It is caused by a build up of plaque bacteria and tartar which is the calcified deposits formed when plaque is not removed adequately. These deposits if not cleaned off regularly or effectively cause inflammation and breakdown of the gums and support structures surrounding the teeth, leading to bone loss, infection and ultimately tooth loss in some cases.

Wellness these days does not mean the same as it did 20 to 30 years ago. Wellness now is about managing or living with our illness or condition. We are happy to tolerate or live with a sore back, stiff neck, frozen shoulder, asthma, high blood pressure, diabetes, chronic fatigue etc because compared to someone who has cancer we believe we are better off. We accept a life that is devoid of vitality because our illness or condition is not terminal.

The immune system is essential for good health it plays a vital role in protecting the body from the vast numbers of disease-causing organisms and other substances it comes into contact with. The role of the immune system is to distinguish between normal body cells and foreign or abnormal cells. Immune balance is the key as over activity leads to allergies and autoimmune diseases and under activity increases the risk of infections.

Iodine is found in dairy products, seafood, kelp, eggs, some vegetables and iodised salt. It is important for essential hormone development in the human body. If you don’t have enough iodine in your diet, it can lead to an enlarged thyroid gland (goitre) or other iodine deficiency disorders. Iodine deficiency is the world’s leading cause of mental retardation in children.

Without sufficient iodine, the thyroid gland is unable to make thyroid hormones in adequate amounts. Iodine deficiency can therefore lead to hypothyroidism and goitre formation (the thyroid enlarges in an attempt to make more thyroid hormone).

Magnesium is a mineral that is essential to many biological processes that occur in the body. Magnesium aids in the body’s absorption of calcium and also plays a key role in the strength and formation of bones and teeth. This means that those at risk for osteoporosis can benefit from taking magnesium.

Amalgam Free Dentistry Is It Enough?

There are many dental practices who now advertise or state that they are amalgam free. It is great that more and more dentists are choosing to longer use amalgam but are they really aware of all the issues associated with the mercury which it contains?

One third of emissions are from natural sources such as volcanoes and 25% comes from combustion of fossil fuels, particularly coal.

Do We Really Get Calcium from Milk and Dairy Products

Soil is the original source of all calcium, which is then absorbed by plants and incorporated into their tissues. Animals then eat the plants to obtain their calcium and other minerals. There is sufficient calcium in plants to grow the skeletons of the biggest animals on earth such as the elephant. It is not hard to therefore accept that there is sufficient calcium in plants to grow a human skeleton.
